It was bigger than I imagined. My first thought was, Where am I going to store this thing?!? And indeed, that was before we remodeled our kitchen, so storage WAS a challenge. A crock pot got booted out of the cabinet to create room for my new appliance.
I took the instruction manual. I used to be immediately confused. It was like reading Chinese. Oh. It had been Chinese. The manual has a number of different languages printed. Once I came across the English section, things were slightly better; although, it did take reading over several sections several times to really know how all of the parts and buttons worked.
I knew the only way through that manual ended up being to actually plug my True Website in and use it! Maybe wild rice had been a safe choice. Sure enough, it worked and cut down the cooking time! (Truthfully, the recipe worked just fine for me personally, but others have used it since and also have reported that there was lots of liquid left. More like soup than rice, even though rice was cooked nicely; they simply were required to drain it.)
I understood making bone broth. Which was simple enough. And I definitely loved without having my crock pot tied up for 3 or 4 or 5 days while my broth simmered. Yet, I couldnt manage to get past bone broth and wild rice.
Learning How To Use My Instant Pot – I truly dont remember the very first thing I attempted. Maybe it absolutely was brown rice? Honestly, I dont remember the actual way it proved. (It was probably fine, or I would have been really discouraged.) I remember being really impressed at how quickly whatever it had been cooked. I did so use the Manual setting, so that it was my very first time actually pressure cooking.
However I also remember being somewhat confused from the instruction manual. So confused, in reality, that I dont have any idea where the instruction manual is any more Learning by watching and doing thats the way i prefer it. When my buddy Wardee announced her Pressure Cooking eCourse, I was saved! Finally! I could WATCH and Figure out how to use my Instant Pot!
The tricks and tips I learned from the Pressure Cooking eCourse changed everything. I didnt know you might actually put dishes inside the Instant Pot I didnt understand what the trivet thing-y was forUntil Wardee showed me! (Much more on this in a minute!)
When Things Began To Turn AroundI remember it as if this was yesterday
My husband was coming home for lunch. I had remembered to thaw the stew meat, but neglected to set it within the crock pot for beef stew. Once I glanced at the clock that read 11:07 and he will be home to eat out at noon uh-oh, I was in danger! That which was I going to do about the stew? Little else was thawed! We had no leftovers!
Therefore I improvised. I simply started adding my personal favorite spices (cumin, chili powder, garlic) for the meat, used the Saute feature, then pressure cooked it and prayed it might turn out. And it did! Not merely did I make lunch in 53 minutes, I made beef stew in 53 minutes! And it also was delicious! Who does that??? Me! From that moment on, I knew Id be just fine. My Instant Pot has turned into a trusted kitchen friend that Ive since trusted to create more lunches and dinners in a hurry.
Issues With The Instant Pot
A list of pros far outweighs a list of cons, but it wouldnt be an honest review of the Instant Pot without full disclosure from the negatives, too, would it? For me, they are the top 4 issues with the Instant Pot:
#1 Smells – The rubber seal within the lid generally seems to really hold on to smells from whatever was previously cooked. For the longest time, my rubber seal smelled like cumin and chili powder because of a big batch of beans I cooked. It enjoyed a very distinct Tikka Masala smell after cooking Tikka Masala. We never noticed any off tastes within the foods, nevertheless the smell was definitely present. We were also hand-washing then since this was before we remodeled our kitchen and place in a dishwasher.
Now that were washing both stainless pot and the rubber seal in the dishwasher, you will find no smells! If you are hand-washing, maybe a long soak in baking soda for the rubber seal will be the ticket to smell-removal? I recommend keeping an extra seal or 2 available just in case.
#2 ?Too Full = Sputtering Bean Liquid Everywhere. I sprouted about 4 cups of chickpeas to help make my Sprouted Kale Hummus. Needless to say, I needed to prepare all of the beans at once, so I figured it might do it quicker within the Instant Pot. Unfortunately, 4 servings of swollen beans the water necessary to cover were just excessive within the pot. Bean liquid was dripping zecsbq of the catch on the back and sputtering out of the pressure valve. It created a HUGE mess. Granted, I had been utilizing a 6-quart Instant Pot. I am just fairly confident the 8-quart Instant Pot would handle larger amounts of foods much more cleanly.
#3 Youre gonna want 2. I promise. Once you work out how awesome the Instant Pot is, youre planning to apply it all. the. time. And you?e likely to want to double up. I learned this the hard way when I made Instant Pot Yogurt the first time. Poor me. I needed to travel without my Instant Pot for 2 stinkin days! Ive since ordered the 8-quart! I have a friend who actually has 3 Instant Pots!
